UConn police are conducting a criminal investigation into a small fire that five students discovered and extinguished in the Music Building at 2:20 a.m. Saturday. The students came across two stacks of burning Daily Campus newspapers on a wooden bench near the building's entrance while taking a shortcut home, said Thomas Zemetis, a 4th-semester political science and communications double major who extinguished the fire. In keeping with the University of Connecticut's green efforts, a new student environmental group was formed last fall. "Real Slow Food," a group formed by Meghan Misset, an 8th-semester nutritional sciences major, was created to raise awareness about sustainable agriculture and locally grown food. (1) comment
The university has made the decision to cancel the December commencement ceremony, according to UConn spokesman Richard Veilleux. According to Veilleux, the cancellation will save the university more than $50,000. The majority of the cost goes to paying faculty and staff overtime for the ceremony. (0) comments
The Quantitative Learning Center and Writing Center are trying to keep the quality of services available to students despite budget cuts made to the university. There was a 3 percent budget cut made in all units on campus for the '08 -'09 academic school year, Writing Center Director Tom Deans said in an e-mail interview. (1) comment
USG will hold a town-hall style meeting tonight at 7:00 in the Dodd Center to solicit student feedback about a possible tuition increase. On hand to listen to students' opinions will be University President Michael Hogan, UConn Chief Operating Officer Barry Feldman and Vice President of Student Affairs John Saddlemire, among others. 2/23 Dieter Tejada, 18, of Norwalk, was arrested at 2 p.m. at the UConn Co-op and charged with sixth degree larceny. Loss prevention agents observed, using their video surveillance system, a man remove the tags from a backpack, place a T-shirt in the backpack and then leave the store without paying for the items.
