The Rainbow Center's "Out to Lunch" lecture series continued yesterday afternoon with a lecture from speaker Pauline Park. In her lecture "Transgender Health: Reconceptualizing Pathology as Wellness," Park shed light on the harmful treatment of transgendered people in the field of health care and the obstacles facing transgendered individuals seeking medical treatment. The heightened attention to global warming and the "eco-friendly" movement means students hear a lot about reducing their impact on the environment and recycling those things that they do have to use. The UConn Co-op now has a large selection of eco-friendly metal water bottles to reduce the number of plastic drink containers we send to landfills each day and students rarely come across garbage cans that aren't paired with the green and blue recycling containers for plastic and paper. If the producers of "Glee," Conor Oberst and Rage Against the Machine formed a band, it would probably be Say Anything. In the same vein as their last two albums, the sextet is almost sneaky about the emo content of their songs on their self-titled new release. (0) comments
Though the Strokes decision to go on indefinite hiatus disappointed thousands of fans, lead singer and songwriter Julian Casablancas is making a name for himself with his debut solo album "Phrazes for the Young." Deriving the album's title and inspiration from the Oscar Wilde essay, "Phrases and Philosophies for the Use of the Young," Casablancas explores human superficiality and greed along with a more electronically-based sound than his former work. For the remainder of the semester, The Playlist will be counting down the 10 most important artists of this decade - artists that have had a serious impact on music as we know it. System of a Down was a rare breed. They were an integral part of the popularization of metal in the early half of this decade, that also brought their own distinct, odd brand of the genre that was both cultured and critically acclaimed to an unsuspecting music market. Never let it be said that Ryan Leslie is a slacker. Making up for lost time after his never-was debut album was shelved in 2005, this week Leslie released Transition," his second full-length of 2009. Leslie will probably never attain the kind of A-list star status he probably thinks he deserves, but for now we can deal if he continues to churn out solid records like these every nine months or so. After listening to Weezer's latest release, "Raditude," I can only wonder what it would be like for the Rivers Cuomo of 1996 to meet the Rivers Cuomo of 2009. Would he even recognize himself? Sure, he'd still have the same Buddy Holly glasses and haircut, but rest assured modern-day Rivers is quite the different guy and this is far from the same band that released one of the most emotionally revealing albums of the '90s in "Pinkerton.
