Shamon Tooles was never a basketball player. Sure, at 6-foot-5, 225 lbs, he had a God-given flair for the sport. After being named All-City and All-District as a senior at Coatesville (Pa.) high school, Tooles chose national powerhouse UConn, where he went on to become a four-year contributor for the Huskies and play a role in their 2004 National Championship. Huskies Responding Well After Loss

If the Huskies need one thing to get back on track after a close road loss to No. 5 Rutgers last Tuesday, it's the current stretch against some of the Big East's bottom feeders. "You never know how teams respond until they're asked to respond," said head coach Geno Auriemma after the team's 73-71 loss at Rutgers. (1) comment

Most teams would be very proud of a 22-2 record with about two-thirds of the season gone by. But then again, most teams aren't the North Carolina Tar Heels. When a team has as much talent as coach Roy Williams has on his roster this year, it's pretty much national title or bust. (1) comment

Mazzilli Brings Audience Back To Roots Of Baseball

Friday night was one of those nights that made me remember why I enjoy sports so much. I didn't go to a game, there was no more breaking news on Johan Santana and I didn't even play basketball at the gym. So what did I do? I went to dinner. Huh? I was sent to cover the baseball team's annual preseason dinner in Hartford Friday night for The Daily Campus and in doing so I got a chance to get away from all the garbage that surrounds baseball - the Roger Clemens saga - and just hear people talk about the game and why they love it. This past weekend the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series had its unofficial start when Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the Budweiser Shootout. While the race is nothing more than a glorified exhibition, it showed the world that Earnhardt is ready to compete for a championship, effective immediately. (2) comments
