Men's Tennis To Host Fairfield

With the wind gusting upwards of 25 mph this past Thursday, the UConn men's tennis team never got their chance to take on in-state rivals Quinnipiac. As of now, no rematch has been scheduled and their current record for the season currently stands at 3-5.
But for better or worse that will change today.
With only six matches left in the regular season, the men's team will play a fellow Connecticut school this afternoon. Fairfield will come to Storrs today when they'll try their best to defeat the Huskies at 3p.m. on the UConn tennis courts. This will give UConn another chance at extending their two match winning streak started over Spring break, when they beat both Valparaiso and Monmouth.
Fairfield started their spring season back on Jan. 26 when they defeated Hartford 6-1. They maintained that competitive spirit and now hold a strong 5-3 record for the season.
The past few times Fairfield University and UConn have met the matches have been close. In the spring seasons of both 2006 and 2007, the two teams have had chances to face off against one another.
In 2006 the teams met for a home match in Storrs. UConn started things off by claiming the doubles point, but their luck changed in the singles matches. Fairfield grabbed four points and things were ended in a disappointing 4-3 loss.
In 2007 the Huskies and Stags played an exhausting four hour match that eventually ended in yet another close 4-3 loss for UConn.
But this could be the year the Huskies end their losing streak with Fairfield. Factors like experience and health are working in UConn's favor. Players Tom Cook, Joe Goldstein, Christian Malbera, Joey Michaels, and Ben Schueler had a chance to take part in that grueling 2007 match and know just what to look for from the Stags.
"They're a very talented and solid team, and most of their players are returning so I think we know what to expect" Michaels said.
Another factor that could help the Huskies today is the overall health of the team. In the beginning of the season the team had two key players - Andrew Marcus and Tom Cook out for a few matches due to varying injuries and illness. But Michaels reports that the team is "doing well and staying healthy."
Both Marcus and Cook have recovered and have been playing their best and doing good things to help out team.
As for what the team has been focusing on in practice, Michaels sais that it's been nothing specific.
"We've been working on carrying on the good vibes that we established during spring break," Michaels said.
After this match the men will return to action again this weekend when they take on fellow Big East competitors, St. John's Saturday. After that, they look forward to another home game against Boston University April 3.
