The Parking Advisory Committee announced plans to open a new 600 car capacity parking lot at Monday's University Senate meeting.

The proposed lot, known as the "Landfill" parking lot, should open in fall 2008, according to Karla Fox, chair of the Parking Advisory Committee.

The approximately 600 spaces will be available to all UConn parking permit holders, including faulty, staff and students, Fox said. Transportation Services has also agreed to a slight modification in the bus routes to accommodate those who park in the lot.

The "Landfill" lot is important because UConn leases "X" lot from a private owner, and the lease expires in 2010, according to Tom Callahan, UConn's associate vice president for administration and operation. It is unclear whether or not UConn will be renewing the lease.

The resolution for the "Landfill" lot will be formally adopted in May, Fox said.

The University Senate also approved changes to the academic misconduct code, centralizing the process of handling cases by creating an Academic Misconduct Hearing Board (AMHB).

The revision replaces section II.E.13. of the university bylaws, and creates the board, which will consist of two faculty members, two students and an administrator, according to Andrew Moiseff, chair of the Scholastic Standards Committee.

Prior to the change, individual schools and colleges heard academic misconduct cases.

When the change was originally presented at the last Senate meeting on Feb. 25, members were concerned the code was too vague and requested the Scholastic Standards Committee meet with UConn's Office of Community Standards, which is the department now in charge of academic misconduct.

"We didn't need to put detail in because it exists somewhere else," Moiseff said. "The footnotes bring up sections verbatim. If something seems vague, they can look at the student code."

The revision that passed at yesterday's meeting has footnotes that refer to the student code, which provides the details to parts of the misconduct code that might seem vague, Moiseff said.

Other changes to the academic misconduct code include the ability of a Dean to bring academic misconduct charges against a student, whereas before, only a faculty member could do so, according to Moiseff.

In addition, the code makes it clear that a student gets an incomplete in the course until the issue is solved, Moiseff said.

Some of these issues were implied in the first version, but addressed directly in the revision, Moiseff said.
