Micah Truax, the 2007 Big East Player of the Year, has had a rough start to the season for the softball team. Batting only .194 coming into yesterday's game, she had recently been dropped in the line-up to see if she could regain what made her the conference's best player.
"I think that she gets into pressing a little bit," said head coach Karen Mullins "She has tremendous offensive talent and I think she puts a lot of pressure on herself."
However it looks like the junior has turned the corner in the last two games. Going 3-for-6 against Providence and Boston College, Truax has been seeing the ball a lot better. That's what has her tied for UConn's all-time career home run record with 20. She is tied with assistant coach Andrea D'Innocenzo, who played for UConn from 1992-1995.
"I don't really think about it[the record], I would rather just get singles and help the team out then just get the one home run," Truax said. "I want to get out of my slump and start hitting normally."
Truax has been helping out the team of late with getting solid pieces of the ball, but as is the case in softball, sometimes you get unlucky. This was the prime example against a very talented Boston College team, as the Huskies out-hit the Eagles 8-6, but lost 6-0.
"We just couldn't drop it in the holes," Truax said, "They played awesome defense and made three double plays, which is outstanding."
Truax made contact with the ball all three times she was at the plate, collecting a hit, a hit-by-pitch and a fly-ball out.
"I feel good, I mean I haven't been striking out as much which is a positive," Truax said. "I have been seeing the ball and sometimes I am just not getting lucky."
Truax could have been referring to the highway robbery that took place when she placed a ball into right field and Boston College's Amanda Booth made a diving catch. Stretching full out, Booth took away a single and a UConn chance to try to put some runs together.
"That was an awesome catch there is not much more that you can do," Truax said.
Truax seems to have gotten more comfortable at the plate which is important for a UConn team that is looking to put pressure on opposing pitchers.
"If she gets herself back in sync it can really add another dimension to our offensive game," Mullins said. "It adds another powerful hitter; Micah can change the course of the game with one swing of the bat."
Truax could add a very dangerous bat to an already scary line-up. Fitting possibly somewhere in between freshman powerhouse Melissa Lucas, Justyne
Roy and Sarah Neuschwander. The middle of the order for the Huskies could become extremely powerful and talented, which would present nightmares for teams trying to take down the Huskies.
