The CLAS quad will be bustling with students, faculty and staff beginning at 5 p.m. on April 11 in support of cancer research in the annual American Cancer Society's Relay for Life event at UConn.
The 77 teams that are currently registered will walk around the temporary "track" until noon on April 12, raising awareness and money for the cause. Teams are still welcome to sign-up for the event.
Each team member is encouraged to raise a minimum of $100 in hopes of reaching this year's goal of $100,000, beating the $89,000 raised last year, according to 6th semester pharmacy major and Chair of the event, Courtney Collins, who hopes to go into cancer research in the future.
"I got involved back at home," she said, "but it didn't really mean that much to me until my grandfather passed away in 2006."
"Cancer doesn't discriminate in who it affects," said 4th-semester communications disorders major and media and publicity co-chair, Erin Toohey. "As a whole, the UConn community already has and will continue to be affected by it."
The UConn Marching Band and Dance Team will lead the traditional procession of cancer survivors around the CLAS quad.
"This is the time to honor all of those who have fought and beat the battle with cancer," Collins said. A luminaria ceremony will follow the procession at sundown in which participants may make a donation to light a candle in the 500 or so paper bags that will line the quad, representing those who have been touched by cancer. Luminaria may be purchased up until 8:30 p.m. on April 11.
"This event is an award-winning event," said American Cancer Society representative Shannon Stahecki. "In New England last year, it was the college event that showed the most growth. There are around 40 very passionate and caring students involved in planning the event."
This year's Relay for Life event will have a birthday theme in honor of its fifth Anniversary at UConn. University a capella groups such as the ConnMen and Ruby Fruit will be present to entertain the crowd alongside improve groups and Wilhelm Sketch Comedy, local bands and UConn dance and tap teams, according to Collins. There will also be a raffle for two tickets to a Yankees' game and posters signed by the UConn men's basketball team.
