Puff, Rougeot Best Choice To Lead USG
Our Opinion
Issue date: 4/14/08 Section: Commentary
Today marks the beginning of this year's election for the president of Undergraduate Student Government. Following a series of in-person meetings which took place Sunday evening, The Daily Campus proudly and enthusiastically endorses Rob Puff and Nicole Rougeot for president and vice-president of the student body.
Although Puff is an outsider to the organization he seeks to lead, he has applied his leadership abilities in other fruitful ways. Puff's stewardship has brought the UConn Club Sports program from one which received no consistent funding to one which now enjoys a $250,000 budget annually. There is every reason to believe this type of persistence will benefit the student body should he be elected.
Puff and Rougeot have ideas for the role and activities of USG which are both reasonable and sustainable.
This ticket desires to simplify and streamline the funding system, transforming it from one which is hasty and ill-understood, to one which is workable for senators, student groups and the student body alike. By providing more time for a group to complete the application process and allowing more time for proper review on the USG end, a fairer and less arduous process is created. With their pledge for widely disseminated funding updates delivered to students via campus media, transparency is improved. When just recently, a large sum of money has simply appeared out of nowhere on USG's doorstep, transparency is a valuable asset.
This is not the only internal overhaul Puff and Rougeot seek to accomplish. In order to create a body which is knowledgeable and interested in fulfilling its chartered goals, the ticket proposes a HuskyCT interface for members of USG so that training materials and scheduling updates can be quickly presented to all within the organization.
As a way to garner more interest in student government, Puff and Rougeot propose a way to increase the visibility of USG, as well as other major student organizations by making the HuskyWOW program more visible. This plan would put members of USG on the streets during a period of confusion for new students, pointing incoming freshman to a dining hall while simultaneously spreading the word about involvement.
With Puff and Rougeot, there appears to be a sense of action, sincerity, desire and knowledge to perform well as the visible leaders of USG. Students seeking an honest mouthpiece and a duo with a sense of urgency to speak for them should cast their ballot in favor of this ticket. They appear eager to speak and act directly, as well as take responsibility for every action of USG next year.
Lack of transparency and in-absentia leadership have pervaded this year, and it is time for a smart change. Puff and Rougeot offer just that.

This is a Great Idea, Daily Campus! I'm definitely going to vote for the candidates whose self-written biographies are longer than their actual platform. (Continued…)
