The Huskies (18-17) will try to bounce back with three non-conference games this week before continuing Big East play April 18 against Seton Hall. The three-game, three-day span begins with Northeastern today at J.O. Christian Field at 3 p.m.
Red Storm starter Jared Yecker pitched six shutout innings and scattered four hits en route to the win Sunday, while Huskies starter John Folino recorded the only UConn win Friday with a stellar performance when he pitched seven and one-thirds innings, gave up no runs, and recorded four strikeouts.
David Erickson pitched the game's final inning and two-thirds to notch his fourth save of the season.
Mike Hashem, who threw two innings in relief and recorded his first win of the season against Rhode Island, took the loss in his first start of the year Sunday against the Red Storm.
Hashem gave up one run on only one hit in six innings while striking out four.
Hashem's last two outings, despite losing Sunday, have been some of the best on the Huskies pitching staff. Through 17 innings, Hashem leads the team in ERA with 1.06 and has allowed only six hits and two earned runs with 16 strikeouts.
Huskies head coach Jim Penders credits some of the success to Hashem's breaking ball.
"He didn't have that breaking ball a couple months ago," Penders said following UConn's win over Rhode Island. "He's worked hard at it and shown some confidence in it."
After salvaging a 1-2 series record against St. John's, which improved to 25-8 (9-3 Big East) and remained atop the conference, UConn shifts its attention to Northeastern (12-16-1).
Northeastern comes into Storrs after losing six of their last nine games in April and, like UConn, has faced Villanova, splitting the series with a 10-9 win followed by a 7-3 loss March 1-2.
Northeastern's offense is lead by shortstop Mike Lyon, who leads the team with a .422 batting average and .824 slugging percentage.
