No One Gets Lucky With Slasher Film 'Prom Night'
Movie Review
Valerie Calderon
Issue date: 4/18/08 Section: Focus
In true slasher movie form, "Prom Night" will make you jump, cringe and incredibly frustrated at the bad luck the characters encounter when running for their lives.
On what should be one of the proclaimed "best nights of their lives," a group of high school students deal with the woes of graduating and the fact that a sociopath just happens to be on the lose at their prom.
This film which is a lose remake of the 1980 film by the same name, featured Jamie Lee Curtis.
Brittany Snow ("Hairspray") stars as Donna Keppel the film's main character and the object of the killer's obsession. The slasher, Richard Fenton, is played by Johnathon Schaech.
Fenton may quite possibly be one of the creepiest looking guys with a 5 o'clock shadow, baseball cap, sports jacket and blank stare. Fenton is one of Keppel's former teachers and becomes fixated on her.
The film begins when Fenton goes over the deep end after Donna's family gets a restraining order against him. While Donna is at the movies he kills her family in order to get to her. Donna gets home just in time to see her mother killed before her eyes. Fenton is charged with the murders, pleads insanity, and is put in a psychiatric ward.
The film fast-forwards three years later, and Donna is still attempting to cope with the death of her family. She now lives with her aunt and uncle and is preparing for her senior prom.
Detective Nash (James Ransone) was on the case of the murder of Donna's parents. He is notified that Fenton has escaped from his psychiatric ward.
Donna and her group of friends are all excited about prom and graduation, but they are also facing the anxieties of being separated. Some typical prom issues are brought up- being nervous about leaving for college and deciding if this is the night to lose their virginity.
While enjoying their time at prom and dealing with these problems, everyone is oblivious to the fact that people are dying around them.
