In response to the 925 students that transfer to UConn in the winter and spring, a new chapter of the Tau Sigma National Honors Society has opened on campus to recognize transfer students.
Transfer students who complete their first semester with a 3.5 GPA are eligible to join.
According to their mission statement, "Tau Sigma is an academic honor society designed specifically to "recognize and promote the academic excellence and involvement of transfer students."
This new Honors Society aims to help give transfer students the same kind of belonging any other UConn student feels.
Tau Sigma offers the chance for transfer students who adjusted well to the move, and had a great academic first semester of 3.5 GPA or higher, to join a society that focuses on their needs.
"This is the first time at UConn that we have an organization specifically for transfer students," said Maria Sedotti, coordinator of orientation Services and a liaison for the UConn Parents Association.
Besides creating a network of support for transfer students, members of Tau Sigma also aim to become involved in community service, as well as helping new transfer students to adjust. A new mentor program will allow Tau Sigma members to pair up with new transfer students and help them avoid "transfer shock" through their own experience and the experience of other members.
Tau Sigma's Web site proclaims that "Tau Sigma members (among the most accomplished transfer students on campus) are perhaps the greatest resource available to serve the current and future transfers at your institution."
In addition, to a mentoring program, the Tau Sigma officers came up with a brand new idea of a transfer learning community. This year will be the first time transfer students will be able to live on same floors as other transfer students on campus. This new housing arrangement should greatly help incoming transfers have a much smoother transfer experience.
"UConn's Tau Sigma chapter is only two years old and already they are doing things for transfer students," Sedotti said. "So as time goes on and Tau Sigma grows in membership, I do see this group making an impact on a transfer student's experience at UConn."
