Ryan McHardy and running mate Meredith Zaritheny were elected as USG president and vice president for the 2008-09 year. It will be McHardy's second term as president.
"We're very happy with what happened, it was a lot of hard work and a lot of credit goes out to the other candidates who put out a tough election for everyone," said McHardy. "I think we won because we tried to make a point of campaigning with traditional methods of trying to connect with students on an individual level."
The final results, which were released early Friday morning indicated that the McHardy ticket received with 1,899 votes, 635 votes more than the second place ticket, headed by Rob Puff, which garnered 1,264 votes. Cara McDonald and her running mate Mike Cronin garnered 278 votes. In all there were 4097 ballots cast.
The Vladimir Voinov-Daniqua Boulware ticket was disqualified in a hearing that ended an hour before the results were announced. Voinov was found to have violated campaign rules that forbid candidates from campaigning at official USG events after he mentioned his candidacy during a speech at Take Back the Night, Wednesday. Voinov's votes were not officially tallied, but had he not been disqualified, he would not have won.
McHardy stressed that in the following year he will focus on continuing to develop USG.
"We're going to carry out our platform and focus on that," he said. "The other main thing we're going to do is listen and figure out as many ways to communicate with the student body as possible. USG had a lot of forward momentum this year and now that we have another year to take this to another level is fantastic."
McHardy wasn't present for the Voinov verdict, but said he regretted what happened at Take Back The Night.
"It's tough because things can get out of hand fast," he said. "I think everyone needs to take a step back and realize that it's just student government and that a lot happens at the university, and we need to try to not interrupt those events."
