It's Spring Weekend, Not Spring Week

With Spring Weekend only days away, people have already started to pre-game. UConn is notorious for its weekend of mass chaos and recklessness. Although many students would deem Spring Weekend the best weekend out of the entire school year, it is also important to acknowledge that it is not the only important weekend.

The culture of Spring Weekend allows students to essentially break the law and turn school into a free-for-all. This is truly a great thing that students at other schools don't get to experience. Drinking alcohol is seemingly permitted with police supervision and students can more-or-less go about their weekend plans without the normal consequences. However, simply because students are allowed to basically, do whatever they want as long as it isn't violent and doesn't involve flipping cars or smoking something other than cigarettes, doesn't mean that they should take advantage of it.

Last year, Spring Weekend was rather tame. There were copious amount of police officers, CAs and hall directors keeping watch over students. There were minimal arrests and nobody got maced. However, this Spring Weekend is already getting more out of control. It is starting at Willington Oaks on Wednesday rather than the usual Thursday celebration at Carriage House Apartments. This is getting slightly ridiculous. Next year it could start at Cedar Ridge Monday and move on to Woodhaven Tuesday.

Although Spring Weekend is great in all of its glory and notoriety, it will lose its meaning if it is taken advantage of that much. It is called Spring Weekend, not week. It will lose its value and its fun if it students continue to try make it into more than it has traditionally been. If students are too hung over from Wednesday, Thursday will not be as much fun and so on and so forth. There is only so much celebrating that students can do - after awhile, it just gets tiring. Also, it cannot necessarily be a good thing to miss Thursday classes right before finals. As it is, Friday classes during Spring Weekend are usually vacant.

Since you are only 4th semester, I assume you have only been to one spring weekend. I really don't know what you mean by massive chaos. Yes drinking is everywhere, but all-in-all 98% of students are there to have fun and let loose. (Continued…)

spring weekend is certainly not the best weekend of the school year and it has gotten very lame since my freshman year. that was prob the last good year of it but it was the start of toning it down since it was just after the riots post dual nat'l championships for basketball. (Continued…)

I think we are old enough to decide whether or not we can drink. People who are not participating in the activities should not be commenting on the behavior that goes on. (Continued…)

Hey,

Great article. I completely agree that UConn students are being irresponsible for spring weekend. Most students drink while the others play scrabble on a Friday night. (Continued…)

Spring Weekend is the biggest load of crock. The whole thing should be scrapped. If I were a teacher I'd schedule a test the Friday before it (or during it, technically, since many losers begin Wednesday/Thursday anyway). (Continued…)
