For students feeling guilty about that beer can - or four, or five - which they placed on the curbside during their Spring Weekend trek to Carriage or Celeron, there is hope for redemption.

Mansfield will be holding its annual Rid Litter Day on Saturday, May 3.

Virginia Walton, who is recycling coordinator at Mansfield's Department of Public Works, said Rid Litter Day has been held ever since she's held her position, which she's had for the past 17 years.

Walton said the day was "a push after the winter, after spring weekend, to clean up the roadside."

The event corresponds with Adopt-A-Road, through which about 80 people make a year-round commitment to keep a designated road clean.

"For a lot of people that adopt a road, their biggest push is on Rid Litter Day," she said.

Walton couldn't say how many people participate each year, because the people participate on an individual basis and can choose the area they want to clean.

However, she said that on Rid Litter Day, one generally sees people picking up garbage, filling up trash bags and lining them up alongside the road.

Walton said everyone was encouraged to pitch in, students included.

"UConn students are absolutely invited," she said.

Trash bags are available in the Mansfield Town Hall Public Works Office and bags of litter separated from recyclables can be placed with household trash or taken to the Mansfield transfer station for no charge, according to a press release.
