UConn head women's lacrosse coach Megan Cersosimo resigned this past Friday, less than a week after the team's final game and after leading UConn the past two seasons.

The Huskies will now search for their third coach in four years.

"I want to thank the administration, coaches and players who have given me so much over my combined 11 years with the University of Connecticut lacrosse program," Cersosimo said in a prepared statement on UConnHuskies.com. "I am grateful for the opportunity to have coached at my alma mater and am proud of what this team has accomplished over the last several years. I have a young son, Brady, at home and I am very much looking forward to spending more time with him and my family."

Cersosimo was not available for comment and did not return phone calls.

Junior Kim McGinty, a player Cersosimo pointed toward at the end of the season to lead the Huskies next year, explained how the coach broke the news to the team, making it clear a subpar 2008 season didn't influence her decision.

"She told us in a meeting last week that she wouldn't be returning for the fall," McGinty said. "She really wanted to make her family a bigger priority in her life and spend more time with her child, it was the right time for her to make this decision. Coach told us whether we were 1-15, or 15-1, it was just the right time in her life to leave UConn and move on."

UConn Athletics Director Jeff Hathaway praised Cersosimo's efforts over the last decade.

"Megan will always be a valuable member of the UConn lacrosse family," Hathaway said in a statement on UConnHuskies.com. "She has been part of our women's lacrosse program from the beginning and has played an important role in the success that the team has enjoyed over the years. We wish the very best for Megan and her entire family."

McGinty echoed Hathaway's sentiments, explaining the important lessons Cersosimo taught the team in her two years as head coach.
