An apology for Friday's front page layout

By Editorial Board
On March 4, 2014

The Daily Campus apologizes for the offensive nature of the Feb. 28 front page. The juxtaposition of two articles on the issue's front page was inappropriate and created a racially charged layout that was unintended and unacceptable.
The article "Bigggggg Mike sits in prison" appeared adjacent to "Trayvon Martin's mom speaking Fri." The article about the campus criminal, Michael Moses Tarpeh, who identified himself as "Bigggggg Mike," appeared much larger and more prominently than the article about Trayvon Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, speaking on campus.
The Daily Campus does not believe the story about Tarpeh was more important, and the light tone of the article was offensive next to the article on Fulton's speech because it minimized Fulton's approach for social progress.
The Daily Campus strives to provide a welcoming environment for all people, and we believe we have failed our constituents with an issue of our paper that placed more emphasis on the arrest of a criminal a year ago than on a speaker promoting social justice.
