This weekend wrapped up the regular season for field hockey teams and determined the Big East regular season champion team for the 2012 season. Four teams, Syracuse, UConn, Louisville and Providence will continue their season as they play in the Big East Championship in Louisville, Kentucky Nov. 2 to Nov. 4.

The No.6 Georgetown Hoyas ended their regular season and conference games this weekend. The Hoyas played Villanova on Friday, and Lafayette on Sunday. On Friday, the Hoyas were down three goals in less than 10 minutes into the game. Villanova had a strong lead of 3-1 at halftime. Georgetown slowly gained momentum back in the second half with goals scored by Annie Wilson and Sarah Butterfield, yet they couldn’t come back to win the game. Sunday the Hoyas played No. 11 Lafayette for the Hoyas’ last game of the season. The Leopards dominated the game scoring 14:51 into the game and had a 3-0 lead at halftime. Georgetown tried to fight back; they had seven shots on goal in the second half but couldn’t come back. The Hoyas lost 7-0 and ended their season with an overall record of 2-17.

No. 4 Rutgers lost their game 3-1 to Maryland on Friday. Maryland’s Janessa Pope scored the first goal with 24:20 into the match. Megan Frazer scored the next goal at 27:21, leaving the Scarlet Knights down 2-0 at halftime. Megan Frazer scored the last goal as well to help Maryland defeat Rutgers. The only goal scored by Rutgers was from Alyssa Bull. Although the Scarlet Knights lost, goalie, Sarah Stuby, recorded a career high of 11 saves within the game.

The No. 2 Louisville Cardinals played the No. 3 Providence Friars on Saturday to wrap up both teams’ conference play. Both teams played through almost a scoreless first half until Alyssa Voelmle scored a goal for the Cardinals with 17 seconds left in the half. Erin Schneidtmiller scored the game-winning goal for Louisville, beating Providence 2-1. Louisville will continue on to play in the Semifinals of the Big East Championship against UConn Friday Nov 2.

No. 1 Syracuse played its last regular season and conference game on Friday against UConn. Liz McInerney, Kelsey Millman and Gillian Pinder all scored goals to help the Orange beat the Huskies 3-2. Chloe Hunnable scored twice for UConn, but couldn’t convert to win the game. With this win, Syracuse was named the Big East regular season champions for the 2012 season. The team has been honored with this title three consecutive years in a row now. The Orange are also the top seed going into the Big East Championship. They will face the No.4 Providence on Friday Nov. 2.

Although the regular season came to an end the Big East Championship will bring great battles for the four teams. No.1 Syracuse, No.2 UConn, No.3 Louisville, and No. 4 Providence have proved to be the top teams of the conference. Such tight competition will lead to great games throughout the weekend.
