The No. 22 UConn men’s soccer team will play its first American Athletic Conference game against the University of South Florida Bulls tonight in Tampa for their second away game of the season.
The Huskies (3-2-1) are coming off their best win of the season, a dominant 2-1 victory over the visiting No. 10 Saint Louis Billikens. Freshmen Cyle Larin and Ethan Decker both found the back of the net for UConn against St. Louis, which led to conference Rookie of the Week honors for Decker.
UConn’s victory was a much-needed one after a tough week of play that saw two losses and a tie knock the Huskies down from their No. 3 national ranking. The win over Saint Louis was both a reminder to how stingy UConn’s defense can b—allowing only four shots to the Billikens—and how potent its offense is when it is gelling.
South Florida (2-1-3) is coming off of a solid showing at the Gamecock Classic in Columbia, S.C. The Bulls tied hosting South Carolina in their opening match and defeated Kentucky 2-0 two days later. But the Bulls’ best showing of the season so far may have been against then-No. 14 Michigan in Ann Arbor on Sept. 6. South Florida went up in the first half before allowing a Michigan goal in the 62nd minute. The two teams continued to battle it out for two overtimes before finishing with a 1-1 draw.
South Florida is the first of two consecutive road games for the Huskies, who will head to Philadelphia next Wednesday to take on Temple (6-2-0).
“They’re two tough teams,” head coach Ray Reid said following UConn’s win over Saint Louis. “South Florida’s very good, Temple’s very good, we’ve just got to put [Saint Louis] behind us and get ready for Friday.”
The Huskies kick off against South Florida tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Corbett Soccer Stadium in Tampa. UConn does not play a home match until their Oct. 5 match against Central Florida.
