Riding on a nine-match unbeaten streak, the UConn men’s soccer team (7-2-5, 2-0-4 the American) will play its final home match of the regular season when it hosts conference opponent, the Cincinnati Bearcats (6-9-1, 1-5-0 the American), on Saturday at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium.
The Huskies are coming off a 1-0 victory over in-state and non-conference foe Yale Tuesday night. Freshman forward Cyle Larin scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season on a header from an assist by junior midfielder Adria Beso in the 63rd minute of the match. UConn defense also allowed a season-best of one shot from the Bulldogs and helped junior goalkeeper Andre Blake record his fifth shutout of the season. The victory was UConn’s fourth in five matches and the fourth win by the 1-0 score on the season as well.
The visiting Bearcats have had a less-than-stellar season in 2013, but are riding on a three-match winning streak, highlighted by their 2-0 upset victory over the sixth-ranked and conference-leading Louisville Cardinals on Wednesday. Cincinnati’s victory was a big help to UConn as it kept the Huskies’ regular season conference title hopes alive. With only two conference matches remaining, UConn currently stands in third place and trails Louisville by three points and UCF by one point in the standings.
Ashani Walker and Alan Rovira, a couple of junior midfielders, are players to watch for the UConn defense. Walker leads the Bearcats with 11 points on five goals and an assist on the season and Rovira has registered a point in each of Cincinnati’s last three contests. The Bearcats’ defense, however, has been shoddy, as the team has given up 25 goals in 16 matches with a goal differential of minus 10. Alex Gill, the sophomore goalkeeper, has allowed 18 goals in the 14 matches he has played for a goals against average of 1.31.
With Saturday being Senior Night for the Huskies, the nine seniors on the squad will be honored prior the match. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
