The UConn men’s swimming and diving team will start its season on Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium at 1 p.m. in an inter-squad meet after their original opponents, Columbia University, could not make it due to on-campus obligations, according to head coach Bob Goldberg.
The inter-squad meet will consist of two teams, split evenly from the UConn roster, competing against each other. The results will not have an impact on the team’s standings or be counted for any points.
Returning to the team this year are seniors Sean Battle, Zach Coleman, Keith Piper and Ben Yacano, forming a “solid core of guys,” Goldberg said. All four serve as captains on the team. The team also welcomes a new face, in the form of recently appointed assistant head coach T.J. Natal. The team hopes that his previous experiences on the coaching staffs of the LSU Tigers and Tulane Green Wave will lend itself to his new position at UConn, where he is working with the sprinters on the team, Goldberg said.
Although it could be considered informal, Saturday’s meet should serve as an indicator of how the star seniors will perform, and of the direction that new assistant coach Natal is going in.
