After competing in both the New Balance Collegiate Invitational and the Giegengack Invitational this past weekend, the Huskies earned three titles on the day, two individual and one for the distance medley relay.
The 1000 meter run was the most successful for the Huskies, as each of the runners competing finished in the top-five with IC4A qualifying times. Dan Holst crossed the line first for the Huskies with a time of 2:27.63 while Scott Johnson took second place in 2:27.92 and Alex Bennatan finished fifth with a time of 2:29.49.
“It feels great to win a race at such a high competitive level,” Holst said. “It builds confidence moving forward. The goal of every season is to win as a team and individually. For me, it means winning either the 800 meter or 1000 meter run.”
Also finishing first for the Huskies was Kevin Steinberg in the 60 meter run with a time of 6.97 seconds, while senior captain Anthony Burris finished behind him in third place with a time of 7.01 seconds.
“It always feels good to win especially at a meet where there is good competition so I am pretty happy with the results,” Steinberg said. “For the championship part of the season I see myself running faster times. I look to be peaking in the 60 and the 200 at the Big East championship and try to score as much points as possible.”
The other title that the Huskies took on the day was in the distance medley. UConn finished first with an IC4A qualifying time of 9:56.90.
Making big progress was UConn’s throwing squad who put up big numbers resulting in a few season bests. Michael Alleman recorded a season best toss of 17.30 meters in the shot put while Josh Faboyede and Pat Sampson also threw season best tosses in the weight throw with throws of 18.15 meters and 18.01 meters respectively. Each throw qualified the athlete for the IC4A Championships.
The Huskies will be back in action next weekend when they take part in their final meet before the Big East Championship at the Lafayette-Rider Invitational at the Armory in New York City on Friday, Feb. 12.
