Tennis impressive in UConn Fall Invitational

This past weekend, the white and blue men’s tennis team hosted the UConn Fall Invitational. Seven schools attended, creating a high level of competiveness. The Huskies took three of the four doubles flights, as well as reached several semifinals in the singles action.
The schools who participated this weekend on the home courts in Storrs were: Sacred Heart, University of Hartford, Quinnipiac, Fairfield, Boston University, Bryant University and Merrimack.
In singles play, the representing Huskies were: Jacob Spreyer, Wein Lin, Ryan Carr, Wayne Harrell, Teddy Marguells, Andrew Ginzberg, Zac McEntee and Joshua Palmer.
In the first flight, Spreyer attempted to come back in the second set, yet fell to Sacred Heart sophomore Justin Pagan 7-6, 4-6, 10-3 in the first round. Quinnipiac’s Sebastian Barbero took the flight in a come-from-behind final match against University of Hartford’s Jordan Badenko 0-6, 6-4, 14-12.
In singles flight two, senior Husky Lin defeated Ofir Solomon of Fairfield 7-5, 6-2 in the first round and lost in the semifinal to Quinnipiac’s Eric Ambrosio 6-4, 6-4. The flight was won by, Boston University junior Jesse Frieder. In the third flight for the Huskies, team captain Carr reached the semi-final, falling to Merrimack’s freshman Matt Pronesti 6-2, 6-1. Bryant’s Dana Parziale took the flight.
Flight four consisted of UConn’s Harrell, who was the only Husky to reach a singles final in the invitational. Harrell defeated Chris Bamhart of Merrimack 7-6, 6-0 and in the semifinal obtained a victory over Boston University freshman Stefan Lemire 6-2, 6-2. In the final, Harrell fell to Quinnipiac’s Garnet Lane, 7-5, 6-0. In both flight five and six, the white and blue men, Marguelles and Ginzberg, reached the semifinals in their respective flights.
Within flight seven, freshman Husky McEntee from Yorba Linda, Calif. lost in the first round 6-4, 6-4 to Boston University student Brandon Phan. Palmer represented UConn in the eighth flight, where he defeated Fairfield’s Tyler Parkes 6-3, 7-6 and in the final dropped the match to Quinnipiac’s senior Alex Lazerwich 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles action, the UConn Huskies obtained great victories in three of the four flights. In the first, flight sophomore Speyer and junior Carr flew through to the final where they faced one of Bryant’s tandem pairs and defeated them 8-4. The second flight was taken by UConn senior Linn and Harrell who also obtained a victory in the final over Bryant. The third flight was the toughest for Husky freshmen McEntee and Ginzberg, who fell in the quarterfinal to Sacred Heart. Bryant took the flight. White and blue men, Marguelles and Hosang beat University of Hartford 8-5, Bryant in the semifinal 8-6 and had an 8-3 victory over Quinnipiac in the final to take the fourth flight in doubles play.
The men’s tennis team had a successful weekend at home and is looking forward to a match versus Fairfield on Wednesday and the Quinnipiac Invitational this upcoming weekend.
