Game of the week: Men’s basketball vs. DePaul (Sat).
UConn snapped their three-game losing streak against DePaul Saturday night at Gampel Pavilion. Jerome Dyson led the Huskies with 20 points in the 64-57 win over the Blue Demons. Stanley Robinson and Gavin Edwards dropped 10 points apiece. Kemba Walker and Alex Oriakhi both scored nine points in the victory, and Ater Majok added six. Majok also had five blocks in the contest. UConn improved to 14-9 overall, 4-6 in the Big East and 3-3 under assistant coach George Blaney.
The big letdown: Men’s hockey vs. Canisius
The Huskies dropped two at home to the Griffins, increasing their losing streak to five games. On Friday night, although UConn killed eight of nine penalties, the Huskies still fell to Canisius 3-1. Saturday was the same result, as two third period goals by UConn couldn’t even get UConn the win. Canisius won 5-2. Dan Naurato, Matt Miller and Andrew Olson notched goals this weekend. Garret Bartus recorded 50 saves in two games and Brad McInnis had seven in a scoreless third period of relief.
Wish we were there: Men’s Indoor Track Invitationals
UConn competed in two meets this weekend, the New Balance Collegiate in New York and the Giegengack in New Haven. The Huskies took home three titles in the Elm City. Three Husky runners finished in the top five of the 100m run, as Dan Holst finished first. Kevin Steinberg won the 60m race. UConn also brought back the Distance Medley team award.
Number of the week: 1,482
The number of points Jerome Dyson has scored in his UConn career, good for 15th place in school history. The senior guard moved past Kevin Freeman on the list in Saturday’s win against DePaul.
