The UConn women’s hockey team will open its season this Saturday with a home game against Union College. Coming off a disappointing 3-29-3 season last year, the Huskies welcome a new head coach to the team in Chris MacKenzie.
MacKenzie brings a fresh face and valued experience with hopes that he can jumpstart the program and get the team back on track. MacKenzie has experience on the ice; he was a four-time captain of the men’s hockey team at Niagara University during his playing days. He also brings 11 years of coaching experience to the table. Most recently he was an assistant coach for the women’s hockey team at Ohio State University.
An unproven team last season, UConn will have five of its top six scorers, as well as both top goaltenders back this season. Despite so much return, the team still features just four seniors among the 24 active players. Among those returning are sophomore Michela Cava and junior Kayla Campero who were the team’s leading goal scorers and had the two highest points totals last season. Junior Sarah MacDonnel also returns to the team one year after recording a team-high 12 assists. Along with many top performers returning, the Huskies will also welcome seven newcomers to the squad.
Last season, the Huskies opened the year with a 3-2 loss to Union. On home ice this time around they hope for a different result. The opening face is schedule for at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Freitas Ice Forum.
