The UConn women’s cross country team will be competing in their third meet of the season, the Ted Owen Invite in New Britain on Saturday. The race is scheduled to start at 11:45 a.m. The Huskies will race against Central Connecticut, Bryant, Boston University, Hartford, Pace and Bentley.
UConn coach Amy Yoder Begley will send out Emily Durgin, Brigitte Mania, Abby Mace, Laura Williamson, Emily Howard and Katherine Vodopia in Saturday’s race.
“The girls are surprising themselves with their accomplishments,” Begley said. “Each week we are looking for improvement, whether that be in times, racing strategy or even in our starts and finishes. If we are able to execute all of these goals, then it is a good day.”
Durgin is one Husky to be on the look out for during the race. The sophomore has led the Huskies in their first two meets, placing second overall at the Shawn M. Nassaney Memorial Race and third overall at the UMass Invite.
“Emily has been amazing this year,” Begley said. “She has had a nice turnaround. All the hard work over the summer is paying off. She has been working on her starts and finishes at practices. She is trying to start stronger at the beginning of the race, and stay up there. She is always fantastic in the middle of courses, but when she improves her starts, she will be even more amazing.”
Begley is unfamiliar with the course the team will be running; she hopes that the team will tackle the course the same way they did at the UMass Invite, when every racer set a new personal record.
