Students will pay an additional $166 in fees next year. In an increase approved at Wednesday’s Board of Trustees meeting. Additional fees include a $10 increase for the Undergraduate Student Government and a $6 increase for The Daily Campus.
Spokesperson for the university Stephanie Reitz explained that fee increase for USG is to support the growing number of student organizations on campus. The additional $6 fee for The Daily Campus is to cover the growing cost of producing the newspaper and maintaining the paper’s facilities. The two increases bring the fee totals to $96 for USG and $20 for the student paper.
Students voted last year to approve a fee increase for USG but did not approve the increase for The Daily Campus.
“Students voted by a slim margin in a referendum against increasing this fee [for The Daily Campus.] However, the board felt that supporting student media with a very small increase in this fee was appropriate,” Reitz said.
Other fee changes include a $72 increase for the general university fee, a $14 increase for the infrastructure maintenance fee, a $30 increase in the technology fee and a $10 increase for the transit fee. Furthermore, a $26 fee used to support the renovation of the Student Union expired this year and was not renewed.
All fee increases are taken into account when UConn puts together its financial aid packets, and Reitz explained the changes were seen as necessary to support the activities, services and amenities of the university.
