The UConn women’s cross country team will be competing in their second meet of the year this Saturday at the annual UMass Invite. The schools competing in the race include, UMass Amherst, Boston College, Maine, Amherst, Vermont and UConn. The schools will be racing on a 5K course with which UConn’s coach Amy Yoder Begley is very familiar.
“This week’s course is really hilly, and the grass is not even. People with weak lower legs will have issues on the course,” Begley said.
Begley will be racing six runners this weekend, the majority being sophomores, but she remains quite confident.
“We are a young team, but we are learning and getting a lot more confident,” Begley said. “I am impressed that even with the sophomores’ limited racing experience, they are continuing to get stronger. I think the girls can compete with anyone. I am proud of how hard they are working and we are going to see good things as the year goes on.”
When asked if this weekend’s race would be run at a particular pace with no spikes like last week, Begley said, “No, this week we are definitely going to race, and see what the girls have.”
UConn grabbed first place at last weekend’s, Shawn M. Nassaney Memorial Race, and they hope to have a similar performance at UMass this weekend.
“We had a very strong start to the season but our long term goal is to keep healthy and gain racing experience,” Begley said.
